During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Pope was the bishop of Rome, spiritual leader of the Catholic Church, and nominal ruler of the Papal States. The office of Pope is called the Pontificate and his ecclesiatical authority is called the Holy See. The Papal States were mostly under the rule of territorial princes such as the Bentivoglio (Bologna) and Montefeltro (Urbino). The territorial expansion was at its height under the Renaissance popes, especiallyAlexander VI and Julius II.
